Your Online Image #2
You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer, when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.
What might you find that would make you not hire someone?
Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?
Looking on Facebook before hiring someone could make you decide not to hire them because you could see if they post anything bad and what type of person they are. There is nothing wrong with using Facebook in this way because if you didn't, then they turned out to be "that" type of person than you'd regret hiring them.
ReplyDeleteFace book is a public website and if anyone doesn't want their stuff to be looked at then they shouldn't have a face book. I agree that it is a very helpful tool for employers to find out information about the person they might hire.
DeleteIt always depends on what job you're applying for. It could be something where those "bad" characteristics don't matter much or can be considered good characteristics. I don't know what job that'd pertain to but you never know.
DeleteI agree with you. However, there are times when people have a completely different personality online than in person because maybe they want to impress someone they're interested in.
DeleteLooking on Facebook could help you by seeing if they post anything bad or inappropriate. You could find stuff out about them. People might think it is wrong using Facebook in this way, but I don't think it is wrong using it in that way because you could find out a lot about them and maybe you would want to hire them or you might not want to hire them.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good idea as well because they could be hiding something from you when you interview them in person, so I think it is the okay to use it so you can know everything you need to know about your new employe.
DeleteI think Facebook is a good idea to use when hiring someone. You could find important information on someone by using this tool.
DeleteI think face book is a good way to find out what people do in there life it can be used to find good/ bad things about them
DeleteI believe it is very annoying for people to post a bunch of stuff on face book everyday, especially if it is inappropriate. I think they should think more before they post things, and think about what other people think about what they post.
DeleteI agree, because if someone doesn't want you seeing what they are posting they are probably hiding something and won't be a good worker.
DeleteI think Facebook is a great way to find out more information about a person before hiring them. It could mean hiring a good or bad person, depending on what they post on there.
DeleteI agree as well, overall using social media in this way is a good thing, it allows businesses to filter through good and bad applicants , as what you post on social media usually translates to what kind of person you truley are.
DeleteUsing facebook to search an applicant can also be a good thing. It can help you learn more about them and their hobbies.
DeleteI do think facebook is a good way to tell the maturity of someone oviously by what they share with there friends and family.
DeleteLooking on facebook before hiring someone could greatly effect your decision to hire them because you could find things that you wouldn't idealy have in an employee. You could also perhaps see things from past jobs o facebook where maybe they socially disrespected a boss or just never went to work. There is nothing wrong with using facebook this way because if they put in online then thats information shared with anyone.
ReplyDeleteIf you are running a family friendly ice cream parlor, you may not want certain types of people to be working there. The type of person you wouldn't want would be someone who posts inappropriate things on social media. I do not see anything wrong with employers looking at your social media because when you post something, you're posting it for everyone to see.
ReplyDeleteI agree, what somebody posts is a big part of their reputation and somebody's bad reputation could give your company a bad name.
DeleteI don't think that there is a problem with looking at someone on Facebook, however you can't rely on the picture for weather to hire the person or weather not too. You have to base you decisions on other things too. Yes Facebook might have some red flags if there are pictures of the person partying or doing something they should not be doing take that into consideration before making a decision.
ReplyDeleteI agree, businesses should have protocol when it comes to hiring, and not just base it off of Facebook posts, but it is a good way to judge a persons character overall.
DeleteLooking at someone's facebook is a great way to find out a bit about them. If you find some questionable posts on their page you may not want to hire them. There is no problem with using facebook in this way because it can be a great tool to find out if you want to hire someone. Someone may send in a great application but post some things they probable shouldn't, you can easily make a better decision and get the best staff possible for your ice cream parlor.
ReplyDeleteI agree. If you want to find out more about the person you might be hiring, looking on Facebook is a good way to see wether or not they are going to be a good worker and represent your business in a good way.
DeleteThe best solution is to delete your facebook profile if you aren't even using it. So many people get turned down jobs because of what they post.
DeleteI agree, looking at someones social media profile is the best way to learn a bit about someones real personality and not just what they want you to think so they get the job.
DeleteI agree, peoples' social media profiles are the easiest way to check out a person, besides meeting them in person. Your profile could be the decision between getting a job and not getting one.
DeleteI agree with you Sabastian. It is the easiest way to check someone out and the get a good idea on how the person is and to know there personality. Your social media profile will make the employers decision on if they should hire them or not.
DeleteI think that looking on facebook while deciding to hire someone is perfectly fine. It could change your decision on hiring them. You can find more information on the person, and if they post inappropriate content and what their social lives are like.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, facebook is a good tool to use when hiring someone. Getting insight on someones life could show what kind of employee the will be for your business.
DeleteI don't see a problem using facebook in this way either. Some people think its wrong to creep on someones facebook page but it is a great resource available to almost everyone. What someone puts online says a lot about them, you don't want to hire bad employees and facebook is readily available.
DeleteI think that looking up someone on Facebook is also a good idea because there are somethings on Facebook that my might find that you wouldn't just find in a job application Facebook is also public so there is no problem looking on Facebook.
DeleteI think it is okay to use Facebook to decide if you want to hire someone. Your possible future employee shouldn't be posting inappropriate things online in the first place. Any swearing, drinking, drugs, or bad behavior online will lead to a definite no if I were to hire them.
ReplyDeleteI think it is okay to use facebook to decide to hire someone as well. Looking on their profile can tell you more information on what the person is like, and if they are a good candidate for the job.
DeleteI agree that it is okay to use Facebook when hiring someone so you can get more information about them. You could see what they're in to and if they post inappropriate things. If you don't and they turn out to be a bad worker, then you would probably regret hiring them in the first place.
DeleteIts is definetly a great way to filter out good people and bad people and their behaviors. If you see someone constantly getting drunk online are you going to want to hire them as it makes you question how rliable and how good that person really is.
DeleteI think looking at peoples Facebooks is fine because it could be the final decision to hire someone that is good, or someone that is obnoxious. It helps employers with picking the right person for the job. So, just don't be dumb online, it can come back to you in the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree you should always be smart about what you post online for this reason. The employer could make the last decision on what you posting so you should always think twice before posting.
DeleteI agree with Janelle. You should always be smart about what you post on your social media sights. You could post something inappropriate without thinking twice and then your employer decides not to hire you. Thats why you should think twice about what your going to post and just not post anything that you shouldn't post.
DeleteIf I were to go on facebook and find inappropriate posts on a possible employees page, I would immediately reject their application. I want mature employees in my work place. Finding things such as swearing, inappropriate pictures, and drugs on a facebook profile of our workers would reflect badly on our business.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, you should always be aware of what you are posting. If you think its not appropriate to post then you shouldn't.
DeleteI agree it is a good way to find out more about the person you are thinking about hiring. That is why you always need to be smart and think twice before you post things because you never know who will end up seeing it and odds are if you feel wrong about posting something you shouldn't post it.
ReplyDeleteLooking at someone's Facebook or other social media accounts could help you on your final decision on whether or not you want to hire that person. It'll give you a look on what the person is like and what they do.
ReplyDeleteIt all depends on the type of workplace you want to run. If its a fast food joint, you need efficient people that can multitask. If its a bank, you need patient people, if its a hospital, you need someone that will never mess anything up, ever. One way to find these traits is that you have to go through there social media outlets. And it's completely fine to do that, it can prove something they said in a job interview and give them a more insight into who their potential employee can be.
ReplyDeleteI agree. If you are running a McDonalds, the standards are not as high as they would be in a hospital. Irregardless of the position, you should always check their social media to get an idea of what the person is like.
DeleteI think its okay to go creep on peoples social media sites for more information for if you're going to hire them, but i also think its not okay. People can have many sides to them, it doesn't always have to be serious. If they're good at their job and are respectful and serious and are 100% committed, but they're a fun, energetic, and no serious person outside of the work place, i think thats fine. People deserve to live there life and do as they please.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about people having different sides to them. Someone could appear to be a person who enjoys going out to party every weekend when they're really the type of person to stay in and watch Netflix.
DeleteI think Facebook is a good way to search for applicants or view applicants that have applied because they could have lied on the application and they might have posted things they were trying to hide from you. They might also post proof of working a previous job similar to the job you are offering.
ReplyDeleteIf you go look on of facebook you could go find out more about your future employee you can go see what he does in his social life if i seen that he is like a party hard and a bad guy then you shouldn't hire him there is nothing wrong with facebook because he is the one that is going to post on there and its his descision to put good or bad stuff on there
ReplyDeleteI agree because some people so post bad things on their Facebook and it will tell you wether they are a bad person or not.
DeleteIf the employer of the business looks on face book and see pictures of you drinking or smoking or you post stuff like that then they will probably not hire you because you look irresponsible and undependable. People should be smart about what they do and what they post. Not the person looking at your profiles fault, if they find something they don't like.
ReplyDeleteYeah, if anything it'd be your fault for uploading those pictures. You should always have in mind that anyone can see what you upload, including your employers and even family.
DeleteYes, always becarefull on what you post because you never know who could be watching. It is important to know that anything you post can be taken in multiple ways. For instance, if you post a picture of you and your friends at a party, an imployer could see that as either one, you are a social person who has good people skills, ore two, you are a person who only lives to party and has very bad responsibility.
DeleteI agree with what you said, should always be cautious.
DeleteI don't think that it matters because how people are on social media is not how they could be face to face. On social media the could look lazy and don't want to do anything, but they could be a hard worker. And if they are goofing around and doing stupid stuff on social media they could just be doing it for a good laugh.
ReplyDeleteI disagree like I've mentioned sometimes the things people post on social media reflect themselves and their everyday life so you wouldn't want someone from the wrong crowd working their if you're trying to run a good business.
DeleteYou could see how many other places they might have worked at, do they party a lot, and are they in a lot of drama. I wouldn't hire someone who parties at that age or loses jobs a lot or is constantly getting into stupid drama with people at their school or whatever else. So I see how helpful social media can be helpful to business owners.
ReplyDeleteI think social media could and should be used as a tool for buisnesses in this kind of way. What a person posts on social media is a great indictor of what that person is like and what they like. It can overall tell you a lot of good things about that person as weel as a lot of bad things which might influence your opinion on hiring them.
ReplyDeleteYes, businesses should utilize facebook as a great tool for finding good employees. People usually have no filter on facebook so you are able to see someone for what they actually are and be able to make a better decision about hiring.
DeleteWhile it is true that you can learn about someone from their social media posts and likes. Remember, it is easy to be someone your not online, and people may not be what they seem.
DeleteI agree with you Schulk dog it does make a very good tool for business owners.
ReplyDeleteIt should be because they can look at your social media account and see your personal life
DeleteYou should always think twice before you post on Facebook or any social media because the employer might want to know more about you so if you have something on there that they don't like or approve of they might not want to hire you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, they might not wanna hire you if they see something they dont like.
DeleteI agree with this alot I think people need to think alot more before posting stuff on the internet. It could make their life alot harder than it needs to be.
DeleteYou can find alot about someone from their Facebook page, who they hangout with, thir hobbies, and personality. However, the internet is not as reliable of learning about somebody as a face to face confrontation. A person may seem responsible from their social media, but may be have poor qualities as a person. I always think you should have a peek at their online live, but don't base your decision on it.
ReplyDeletePeople search their patential employees on facebook all the time. My father when he was getting his new bank job actuly temporarly shut down his facebook so that they couldn't look into his account.
