You're Messed Up!
You're addicted! You're messed up!
Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the commentary after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.
What are the dangers? We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators. We're talking about quality of life - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, and how it conditions you to behave. "Real life" vs. "online life".
Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way. This is a difficult question, because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively. You can handle it, right?
THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?
This is a 'deep topic'. One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.
Facebook, snapchat, and instagram effectsme in a negative way because everyday I have to look at my phone and for notifications. If i don't have my phone in my pocket or don't have it at all it bothers me because I am attached to it. Pretty much everyone are attached to their phones.
ReplyDeleteI agree I spend a lot of time during the day looking at my phone checking notifications, reading articles, and texting friends so I see what you mean by it being very distracting.
DeleteI agree because I spend a lot of time on my phone every day. The internet can also be a good thing because if you have a family member that lives far away, the only way of communication with them is through messaging or calling.
DeleteI agree because a lot of people can't go about a day without their phone, let alone not checking it, and when they do go on it they get side tracked and spend more time then they initially thought they would.
DeleteIf you feel your too atatched to your phone, then try this. I created a challenge for you extreme users... Turn off your notifications and only use your phoe for calling for an entire week. I know who makes calls anymore. However, I think takeing a step back like this could be benificial to almost anyone. If you think you could do it, give it a try.

ReplyDeleteSocial media has negative effects on peoples' lives, even our own. They can be EXTREMELY time consuming if that's all you focus on, causing you to possibly miss out on more important things in your life. Another con is how you could act online considering the fact that you'd be hidden behind a screen. Someone could put a post or picture about you and a war on a social media site could start between you and someone else.
ReplyDeleteI agree they take up a lot of time and take away from our lives, and how it's like you are two different people because you are hiding behind the screen and being face to face are so different.
DeleteAlthough social media can tear lives apart it can also bring people together. You can meet new people, help people when they are in a crisis, donate money, and be exposed to new opportunities.
DeleteSocial media can cause major drama in your offline life but it is also another way to contact people who aren't really in your life anymore such as old high school friends or family that moved away. The internet can be a good thing if you make it one.
DeleteSocial media can create a lot of problems for people. Although it is very helpful, you can look just about anything up and get an answer. You can get directions to places, check the weather, & find information.
DeleteI think that social media can be dangerouse, not only is it where we keep the mojority of our personal lives, but it can also be distracting. I have a family member that is on social media all the time. When the family got together for a reunion, I remember my mother attempting a conversation, at first I didn't pay attention, but it was hard not to see that my mother was frusturated at her for not even trying to focus on thier conversation. She was to busy checking her facebook every 10 seconds. I thought this was very rude. That day, I understood what social media can become, a distracting, life sucking thing that makes you oblivious to your surroundings causing you to miss life's greatest moments.
DeleteSpending your life behind a screen can have very negative effects on your life. For example today's children have horrible social skills, some don't even know how to carry on a conversation face to face. People hide behind their screens and say horrible things to people that they would never say to that persons face. This is why bullying is such an issue on the internet.
ReplyDeleteYes but talking online can sometimes be easier than face to face communication. For people who have friends and family who live far away, they often rely on online messaging to stay in touch with others.
DeleteSome of the negative effects of an online life include internet addiction. Some people cannot got more than 10 minutes with out checking their phone, browsing the internet, etc. For starters, its not good for your eyes to be staring at a screen that much. If you're inside all day staring at a screen, you're not being active or exercising. That can lead to obesity and many health problems that come with obesity such as heart problems, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the internet can cause disease it can also give us more information on how to stay healthy and fit. The internet can also show us the warning signs of these diseases.
DeleteEverybody's talking about social media being a "time-waster" which is true. But how else is it bad? Is it bad to be TOO connected. Is it possible to know too much about what's going on - or knowing about it too soon?
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the last time I went out without my phone disconnecting me from my friends or searched through meme pages at 2 AM ruining my sleep schedule. It's a bummer when you make plans to hangout with friends and once you're all together everyone is occupied with their phones and social media. We are the most connected generation but also the most disconnected...
ReplyDeleteI agree. I also can't remember that last time I haven't had my phone with me. I am on my phone a lot in one day. Everyday I wake up I go on my phone and every night I go on my phone. I make plans with friends on my phone. People are always on there phones.
DeleteThings can seem so good over text, talking to friends, making plans, or talking about how things are gonna happen. Then when it's happening in person, people tend to just sit there on there phones and not talk very much or suggest things to do so you just end up sitting there on their phone.
DeleteI always have my phone with me the only time i really don't have it is when it is dead or something we use them to much i think but its hard to give it up
DeleteAlthough phones, gaming, internet, and etc. hurt the users the jobs they create are what we need there are people who work on servers and manage all sorts of amazing things needed to do this. Gaming companies and phone companies make millions and millions every single time they release a new product which then pay their thousands of workers. When these items are sold they go directly to store usually to be sold making the stores money to keep the circulation of money going. It also allows easy communication between businesses, people, and governments although we are a more disconnected from one another. The human race has never been more connected and ideas are shared at a snap of a finger. It's a great time to be alive. We might be born to late to explore the world, born to early to explore space, but we are born just in time to explore the internet and more importantly memes.
DeleteSpending too much of your life behind a screen can be very negative on other aspects of your life. Kids now have little to no social skills, they say mean things from behind their computer/phone, and when they come face to face, they don't know how to act.
ReplyDeleteI agree, although there are ways that the internet can benefit our lives like when big events are going on we can go on the internet to find more information about them, we can also use the internet to stay connected with family and friends that might have moved away. The internet is also a good resource for school the internet is very good for research.
DeleteThis is very true. Talking to someone in person and online can be like talking to two completely different people. People speak their mind more online and tend to not process in their mind what they are typing.
DeleteYes I agree people spend to much time online, but think about all the perks of being online. You can shop, talk to friends, check the weather, play games, and do homework. Like anything, the internet should be used in moderation.
DeleteI agree that kids now have no social skills, that's even with todays young adults. Teens, young adults, and younger kids who spend too much time on the internet have very poor social skills and can cary on a complete relationship of some sort though a screen but have little to no idea how to perform in face to face reality.
DeleteI think that spending to much time on internet and even mobil devices will affect you in a negative way, because if you spend to much time on the internet it can be bad for you and kids will lose skills such as communication and it even turns into a problem when it comes time to get off the internet for example at school kids had the rule of staying off there cell phones (a form of internet) and they couldn't listen to the rule and soon enough cell phones were taken away. In conclusion I think that a few reasons the internet and cell phones are bad is because they are addicting and after a while can be almost impossible to stay away from, and are decreasing our everyday skills because now that we have the internet we dont need to go and use them.
ReplyDeleteThe internet... It is a one way ticket to being socially awkward. Social media, countless videos, and video games are incredibly addicting and serve very little purpose accept for the creator to make some dough. It is scary how many hours young people spend online, they interact fine with people they don't even know but when it comes to real life they can't even carry on a conversation. With all this screen time children don't develop important skills that they need in the world. They might be able to slay the "three-headed dragon of doom" but they can't even kill a spider for their mother. Social media is just as bad if not worse, people are constantly checking to see what their status is online but their real life status is something terrifying. The addictiveness of the internet effects your life in a bad way because we will not develop important skills we need in real life.
ReplyDeleteYou can also looked at it as an escape, like if they are being bullied in school, they are a completely different person on social media. Especially if it is a "stranger", you might not know them very well, but you play with them all the time and sometimes they can be your only friends.
DeleteSocial networking such as facebook and twitter have negative effects on your online life because it takes up a lot of your time because you're always on it. It also effects your online life because someone could say something about you and it could make you do something bad. A lot of people are addicted to their phones and can't stop playing on it.
ReplyDeleteIn todays life, kids grow up with phones in their hands, unlike back in the day when you grew up going outside to find something to do. People use to have a lot more face to face interaction, and I feel like they respected each other a little more. Today, some relationships are only over text, the people never talk to each other in person, or even over call. People say stuff over text that they wouldn't say to a persons face, what does this say about people?
DeleteI agree with you completely but what about the family that lives too far away to see face to face? say you have some important news to tell them that just can't wait. Do you wait for them to come up? that could be months of waiting and the important thing might just not matter by then.
DeleteI agree with the family part to. It is nice to talk to your family that lives out of town. What if something happened in the family like a death or something you would like to tell them or maybe just give them a call. I think that is the best way to talk to family members that live out of town.
DeleteInternet is a highly used tool in this day and age, but there are some sites like Facebook and Twitter that are not as useful. These sites take alot of time out of the day for some people, spending up to as much as 4 hours a day, just scrolling through your feed. It is also a distraction from people and their jobs, leaving a lack in productivity.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's good to have all these social media sites, because it keeps us all connected. Using it for 4 hours is excessive, but I think it is a good tool to keep us al connected.
DeleteI agree that these websites are highly used and may not be useful in someways. Having these websites help you stay connected with friends and family and keeps you up to the latest news.
DeleteI can see where you're coming from, Facebook and Twitter ARE useful is some ways, but in todays time it has just been resorted to being a time wasting tool.
DeleteThese may be a lack of productivity if you are on them during work hours but social media is a great way to talk with friends and meet new people. You shouldn't be on your phone at work anyway and I actually think that social media can better improve your way of life. You can share adventures you go on with friends and help you get closer to some. Without social media, contact with people you know would decrease and possibly lead to losing some friends.
DeleteYes, the internet should be used as a tool (including social media), but as well as being a tool for good, it can become a tool for bad. Such as internet addicition which is acutually a thing now, which is sad because older generations never had to deal with this. Their is so much more to life then peoples opinions oline, so I encourage everyone to be proactive in their life and moderate their usage of technology.
DeleteThere are good reasons to be on the internet for one reason it is good for doing homework but it is also very time consuming watching a video that you really want to watch, it could be like a series you watch one the you watch another, get outside more
ReplyDeleteThere are also good things about social media, like it makes things a little easier when your super busy and want to stay in contact with friends and your family.
DeleteSocial media can also help with current events that happen all around the world. It helps you stay up to date on those kinds of things.
DeleteI agree that it is a very good tool for homework, but sometimes other parts of the internet can test you. Like cade said, if you're supposed to be doing homework, but you know there's a video you want to watch, you might end up watching the video instead of doing homework.
DeleteYeah, it can be a good tool for homework, but it depends on if you mean using the internet to cheat or using the internet to "help" with homework. (if there's a difference) As much as I think its a good tool, most people would just straight up look up the answers instead of using the internet to help you. If you had the option to chose a math book with steps to complete the problem or a math answers book, which one would you take? That's essentially the deal with the internet-homework debate.
DeleteI spend hours watching videos, looking at stuff, and talking to people on my phone everyday. I don't like that everyone is so attached to there phone, and a lot of people can't go without their phone. I don't like that when you talk to people over message that your not actually talking face to face. I really don't like when people think they are not good enough because they see photo edited pictures of good looking people.
ReplyDeleteThere are also positive aspects to social media though. It is a great was to stay connected to your friends and meet new people. Depending on what you are doing online, spending hours on the internet can actually increase your knowledge or possible learn a new skill. If you are doing something healthy you enjoy online or if you are learning about something new then what is the problem. Talking with friends and doing things you enjoy online can help improve your way of life by adding new skills to your arsenal and meeting new people.
DeleteIf you spend too much time on the internet your social life can decrease and you are more likely to be a subject to cyber bullying. People have a easier time speaking their mind online than they do in person which can cause hurtful words to be said.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, many people say more online then they would to your face. It is easy to hide behind a computer screen. At the same time social media is a great way to talk to friends and family that may live far away. You can communicate with them by face timing, messaging, and sharing pictures with them.
DeleteThat is a good point. The longer we are on the internet and social media the more exposed we become to the toxcicity of the internet, including cyber bullying. It is a proven fact people will say things online that they wouldnt tell you in real life so, overall i completly agree with you.
DeleteSocial networking has a negative effect on young life today because we spend too much time obsessing over things that without them wouldn't really matter. have you ever been having an absolute great day and you check your phone and see something that really dampens your mood? whether its a rude text or unanswered text from someone expected or even a post? social media can be very addicting and help people to connect but it can also hurt people and tear friends apart.
ReplyDeleteSpending too much time on social media is becoming a problem. While using sites such as, Facebook, Instagram, and twitter it can distract you from school and work. People start depending on the internet for interacting with other people instead of getting up and going to social events, or meeting friends or family. When talking on social media you don't always know somebody's tone, so you can take something the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteHowever I believe that using those social media sites can help as long as they are used the right was such as keeping in touch with friends and family that live far away. I also think that they are good for news because news spreads fast on social media.
DeleteSocial media has become a big problem because everyone is on it all the time. I know some people that if you take their phone away they will start to go mad. In my opinion i think that everyone should get outside more. I think that face to face contact is the best for people
ReplyDeleteThere's some positives to social media, not just negatives. An example is being able to use social media to keep in touch with friends that you rarely see or coaches and/or teachers for help on an assignment or a play.
DeleteYes, I guess that you are right there are positives about having social media.
DeleteSocial media is good and bad for people both at the same time. Some ways it come in good is for keeping in contact with people you don't always have time to meet face to face like friends and family. But in other ways it can be kind of bad is because everyone is almost like two different people, you can be one person behind the screen but another face to face with people. People can't also seem to put them down or feel really lost with out them.
ReplyDeletePeople need to takes some time off of social media. They need to get of of it and learn new stuff outside like working on a truck or learning how to drive a manual car
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to think on social media, because I don't have it. However, There is no doubt that it is becoming contrivesial. I don't know how exactly people use it and can't form a strong opnion. However, I do belief that it is a good thing. Sharing importent information at almost instant speeds allows for more time to do other things. It also means you can have a conversation with your friends/family when ever you ant to. I can see how people might abuse this and post non important things, but it might just be because they don't have anyone to talk to and are simply trying to socialize. Isn't that what social media is about?
ReplyDeleteYou should get it it helps a lot with getting into contact with people
DeleteSocial media, it really depends on how you look at it and how you, yourself, use it. If you spend a lot of time on it, thats not good. It eventually makes you self-conscious and has you worried about nonexistent internet points (likes, up votes, etc). Well, that's the most common case, at least. In good ways, it allows for easier communication for planning events and the ability to talk to old friends and such. But really, in the end, it does just depend on the person and how you look at the impacts of social media.
ReplyDeleteI completly agree, it can have some very negative ways, and have some good ways, it all depends on how you use it.
DeleteSocial Media, and the internet effect us in many different ways, including negative ways. We can get so caught up with the internet , and what people think of us we can become depressed and negative . It can compass so much of our life we don't worry about whats happening in the physical world. If we get caught up with what people thinking of us, what do we think about ourselves?
ReplyDeleteIts 50/50 with social media. It can be very good and very bad. Some people actually depend on the internet, and i think thats a bit extreme. It could be a good way of communication, but it can also be your only way of communication, and i also think thats not the best.
ReplyDelete
