IoT: The Internet of Things

IoT: The Internet of Things

- The screen on you refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smart phone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you, because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

We Need To Get The IoT Right

A Hacker's-eye View of the Internet of Things

  1. Having everything we own being able to communicate with each other would be awesome. If your body could alert your phone to book a haircut when your hair gets too long and your garage could open automatically when you pull in the driveway. Having these advancements would be a luxury but also extremely dangerous. The internet isn't the most secure place even with firewalls, hackers are around every corner that want to steal your information. If the locks on your house are part of the IoT, hackers would have the chance to break in without physically breaking anything!

    1. Yes the internet is not the safest place on earth, which is why i think the IoT is a horrible idea. Not to mention a waste of money.

    2. I agree with that you could have random hackers try to steal your things and information. If it knows your garage knows your car they could steal the information from the car.

    3. Your right, the IoT is dangerous. But hopefully, as technological advancments get better, so will cyber security.

    4. Yes, the internet isnt the safest, and can be dangerous.

  2. I feel that having everything interconnected has good intentions, but can go south really, really quick. No one can tell me that they haven't heard about people's stuff getting hacked. If they haven't, they've been living under a rock. Having everything interconnected is great and all, but there's too much room for problems and hacking.

    1. Exactly, having your underwear communicating with your washing machine would be cool and all, but what happens when someone hacks into that system. There is too much room for error and is more trouble than its worth. Interconnecting different appliances is about as far as I am comfortable with, anything more than that is inviting hackers right in.

    2. If you connect all your appliances and one thing goes wrong, couldn't it also ruin your other appliances connected to it?

    3. I agree that having everything connected is a good idea, but what happens if a hacker gets into some of your personal information?

    4. Could not agree more I believe that along with connecting everything to everything it'll increase obesity rates because it promotes laziness.

    5. You have to remember, when it comes to hacking a chain is only as stron as its weakest link. So your smart home's security may be great, but does your automatic garage have the same level, because if they get into that, everything has been compromised.

  3. Having everything we have connected with each other would be a good idea but could turn bad very quickly. There are hackers everywhere on the internet which could lead to very bad things happening to you. Once a hacker gets just a little information about you, that could be enough for them to ruin your life.

    1. This is true, especially if the get into your house. If everything is connected they could basically control your life.

    2. I agree if they get one little piece of information they could ruin the rest of your life and make your life miserable.

    3. I agree, having everything connected is good and bad, but things have kind of been like this for a while, we have identity thief's, they can ruin many aspects of your life. So really, none of this stuff is new, just evolved.

    4. That is true a hacker only needs a credit card number, social security number, and even your birth certificate to ruin your life.

    5. Yes, it is bad enough when hackers take information online but if they can hack into physical things that gets scary. It is a good idea in theory but in practice there can be a large security risk.

  4. Having everything connected is a great idea yet also a bad one. It would be awesome to be able to have a fridge that would no what you need and make an automatic shopping list or be able to keep track of your food intake or calories. A downside though is hackers or viruses that could be pinned at one appliance but could ruin the rest of them as well

    2. Exactly I agree they can be used for the good but they can also be kind of a bad thing because like you said the hackers are always a problem.

  5. If you were to pull in the driveway your door to your house could unlock or your garage door would open but there are some bad things that could happen because their are a lot of hackers out there and they could hack you and when they find all of your information they could find where you live and stuff they could come to your house and hack you and they would be able to get in your house and your garage.

    1. I agree it could be helpful, but then again how would they identify that it is you pulling into the driveway?

  6. Having everything connected is a good idea in some ways but could also be very dangerous. Before you get home you could turn on the AC from your smart phone, and change the thermostat, that could be very convenient. It could be dangerous though because of hackers, they could hack into the system and ruin the appliances.

    1. I think it would be helpful, but are you really willing to risk your home security just to be able to turn on the AC with an app?

      Delete
    2. I think that some things like that are helpful like if you were disabled that could be very useful, but also these things need to be put to use the right way and not just to be lazy.

  7. There are many pros and cons with the IoT, but I believe the cons overpower the pros. Some of the cons include this being creepy, and having malfunctions. I find it very creepy that an appliance can know your health status, whats in your fridge, and knowing what lights are on in your house. Yes it would be convenient to access your thermostat with an app, but are you really too lazy to get up and change it your self?

    1. I agree with you on this, people keep becoming more and more lazy as time goes on and technology improves.

      Delete
    2. I also agree because technology is making people become more and more lazy every day.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you to because technology keeps improving and people are being a lot more lazy.

      Delete
    4. I agree. People will start to get lazier by the day if everything becomes connected to the internet.

    5. I agree with you, people that like IoT only like it because they are lazy. There is no reason that you should have a device that turns on your lights or faucets for you. Is it really that hard to flip a light switch? With this new technology people act as if the easiest tasks are the hardest.

  8. I feel as things are starting to become out of hand with loT because, technology has come so far and some of the things are very helpful like when you can see what's in your fridge to see what you need at the store when your not home, but when you have to use it to turn your lights in your house on and off I think people are becoming to lazy.

    1. I agree with you on the usefulness but the risk is still there of being a major target to hackers.

    2. I agree, people are becoming lazier. If people continue like this, I feel that people will have no reason to get up from where they are sitting when they are at home.

    3. I agree, with all these technology's it is making people very lazy and people are not learning the new skills that they should be.

      Delete
    4. I 100% agrree, their comes a point when its just laziness everything doesn nt need to be connect to the interet, were already so reliant on the internet itself as it is now a days

  9. I think it's a horrible idea if not done properly hackers get smarter and smarter and grow in size every day. Having everything connected to Amazon, Facebook, and other internet resources with personal information makes some of these devices a prime target for stealing information and ruining peoples lives.

  10. In my opinion I think that the loT is getting a little to out of hand. The internet is taking over everything and it is making people lazy because they don't have to do anything themselves. If you can just order things from the store and have them sent to you that is making you lazy because you are not getting up and going to the store. I also think that it is bad because there are hackers and sometimes things don't work. Having all these things makes you a bigger target for something bad to happen.

    1. I agree Kailey. It kinda reminds me of the movie Wall-E where everything is controlled by the internet (or something like it) and the people are lazy.

    2. I was thinking of the same thing Sam. The world ended up going to waste because people were too lazy and relied on technology to do their work for them. That is what I think our world is going to if we keep relying on technology.

  11. I think there are positive things that come with IoT but, there are a lot more negative things that come with IoT. For example people become lazy, and dependent on technology. People can get obese, less intelligent, and unreliable.

    1. I don't think there is an issue of obesety I think the real issue would be with security ad saftey when everything is hackable... but as i have said before this is a thing it's the future there is no way buisness like apple and intel wont be taking advantage of the IoT

      Delete
    2. that is my argument a lot of IoT devices dont really actually need to be connect to the internet, sometimes it is best for stuff to maual nd for you to learn and use your knowledge as well as getting IoT devices hacked and information stolen

  12. The Internet of things is both good and bad (obviously) depending on how you look at it, it's good because you can have easier access to your home but it's also bad because it opens up literal areas of your house to hackers. Imagine having your lights flicker on and off without any control (or maybe control? Not sure how it would work) or having hackers control your temperature, or your door locks. The Internet of Things system is still frankly new to the market and peoples homes, there's obviously plenty of bugs and security issues they need to hammer out, but depending on how they execute it, it could decide the future of the internet of things market. Nevertheless it's pretty cool.

  13. IoT can be a great thing to have if it was more secure. Hackers can hack anything with an IP address which is everything that can connect to the internet. And if your house is outfitted with all of the new tech it can be controlled and hacked by Hackers.

    1. I agree 100% with you now a days it is easy for hackers to gain control of alot of stuff I mean if your fridge is on the wifi they could even control that!

  14. I think IoT it an amazing thing to have ad no matter what we do people are gonna take advantage of this idea so I think everything shuld be in moderation we can have it just not to much of it.

    1. I agree, people are gonna do as they want and please.

    2. The expansion and use of internet is uncontrollable I believe. People are gonna connect what ever they want if they are smart enough and soon enough people wont be able to live normal lives. Someone will take over the world with technology

      Delete
  15. For IoT, I feel that there are more negatives compared to positives. Hackers could gain power if everything is connected to the internet whether it be something of little importance, like a refrigerator, to something much more important.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think the IoT has gone far enough. It shoud wait up for cyber security to catch up with it, otherwise its far to dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The internet isnt the safest, but i think in time as technology grows, so with its security.

  18. I believe their is a certain extent between laziness and convienience and do not belive having everything connected to the internet is a good thing. What would happen if the internte went down and you couldnt drive your car because it needs to be connected to the internet.

    1. I strongly agree with you. People already depend on there cell phones to run there life and a lot of people can't have good, respectable, intelligent conversations anymore.

  19. A couple movies have ruined my opinion technology working together and communicating. I feel like hackers are gonna be able to take over the world and kill you with your blender while there on the other side of the world. I believe technolgoy should slow down and people should learn how to talk to each other before there refrigerators start talking to them.
