The Right To Be Forgotten

The Right To Be Forgotten

A few years ago, the European Union Court of Justice said that citizens have the right to ask that links be removed if they contain information that is "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant." (They determined this following a court case where a Spanish man won the right to have negative information about him removed from Google search results. SEE LINK BELOW) There are efforts to make this the law outside of Europe, including in the U.S.

We've talked about the fact that information you post online is essentially permanent. Should it be, in all cases? Should someone have the right to have old, irrelevant information expunged from the Web?

Read this article, and also the arguments that follow it, ("The Arguments"), to help you form your opinion.

"Should There Be A Right To Be Forgotten?"

  1. I believe people should have the opportunity to erase inaccurate information online. having outdated or inaccurate information can give people a bad wrap. On the contrary, having the power to be able to erase things online can be dangerous. Regulating what is deleted would be extremely difficult and probably more trouble than its worth.

    1. I agree, having to regulate what is deleted seem like it would be difficult to do. Also, trying to decide what should be deleted and what shouldn't.

  2. I believe people should have an option to erase information online as long as it's truly inaccurate. Having inaccurate information about you online can make you look like a bad person, when you're not. If you were in charge of deleting or keeping the information online about the person, it would be overwhelming because so many people would want it done.

    1. I agree maybe they put that information on there when they were younger and they didnt even know about it give them a chance to delete it

    2. Yes absolutely, if something is terribly wrong then you should have the right of getting it erased. The regulating of what gets deleted and what stays would be nearly impossible. Its a good concept but in practice it would be difficult.

    3. I agree with you cade. Give people a chance to delete there post from a couple years ago because most of the time people don't even know that they put it on there.

    4. I kind of agree. The internet is riddled with inaccurate information. People just need to lear to take it with a grain of salt. Also, having to be in charge of deleting data seems like it could tun into a way for shady people to clean up their online image by bribing the person working that.

    1. I agree you should be able to delete what you want online because like you said it can make you like a bad person and people could judge you for something that you regret from a while ago.

    2. I agree, or one of your friends post something stupid on your online profile and it makes you look like a bad person.

    3. I agree with you because if it was posted along time ago when you were younger, you probably didn't think before you posted it and didn't mean to.

    4. if they post something when they were in high school and partying or something and you want to get a job and they look at that you should be able to delete it or explain it

    5. I agree with having the choice to delete something from online and how it could potentially make you look like someone you aren't. There is one thing that would be a problem, and it's that people could take advantage of it.

    6. I agree and disagree at the same time. There are some cases where maybe its not your fault that something got posted on the internet but its at your cost in that case you should be able to get rid of it but if you posted it i think it should stay.

  4. I think you should have the right to get something erased off the internet, but only if the information is inaccurate or you have a good reason. If I were in charge of being able to control what is deleted off the internet, I would be completely overwhelmed Everybody would want something deleted so would it really be worth it to go through everything on the internet just to have something silly be deleted?

    1. I agree you should not just be able to delete anything you want it should only be able to if there is a logical reason.

    2. I agree because people change sometimes and if there is something out there on the internet from many years ago that was inaccurate that may put a bad image on someone even though they have changed.

    3. I agree, erasing everything that people want remove would be very time consuming also.

    4. That is a good point, but again as I said before I just dont know if its possible to remover your mistakes from he internet it is seen and saved by almost evrything including people and websites, but I will say 1 thing it is not fair to be judeged for 1 mistake you made online because mistakes happen.

  5. People who have made mistakes in there life like putting information the there social media account when they were younger and did not remember because he was young he should have the opportunity to erase all of the information that he may have did when he was younger

    1. I agree because you might be young and dumb and it probably doesn't matter now so it wouldn't hurt anyone if it were to be deleted.

    2. I agree. People make mistakes and they might have posted something a couple years ago and they want to delete it. If they want to delete it let them. Let them delete it.

    3. This is a good point but it also rings up back to an older blog about our mothers sending us friend requests. They should be able to watch over us and make sure something like this doesn't happen.

    4. Yes, people can do some stupid things on the internet when they are young and don't think about what they are doing. They should have the chance to delete outdated and incorrect information because having that out there can give you a bad wrap.

  6. I believe you should have the opportunity to erase inaccurate information that is no longer relevant information from the web because people change and lives are constantly moving. you don't want something from your past to come back and hinder you later.

    1. I agree, but that would be a long and stressful process to have something completely removed from the internet. People do change and if some inaccurate information from your past is preventing you from getting a job, it should be deleted.

  7. I think people should have the option to get rid of something they posted on the Web if they no longer want it present on the Web, but there could be information vital to a police investigation or something that could be deleted by the suspect.

    1. I kinda feel like the internet is like a court system, where no matter what you do or say, theres someone there to prosecute you for something you did. And like a court system, whatever you say or do, it will be remembered and used against you. It would be real amazing to take back some of the stuff you post, because false judgment is not necessary when using the internet.

    2. I think that an individual should have the right to remove something from the web if they so choose. However while it is removed from public view, the internet company should still be able to keep it in data storage in case of it becoming necesary for things like police investigations. I believe that is a fair compromise.

  8. I believe that you you should be able to erase things off of the internet because if you posted something in the past and you were not really thinking before you posted it and you have changed very much since you posted that. If you have inaccurate information out on the internet it can put a bad outlook on you.

    1. I agree if you post something on the internet in the past depending on what it is, it could be a bad outlook for you.

    2. I agree because if you posted something when you were younger and didn't think about it, then it could leave a bad outlook on you.

  9. I feel that people should be smart about what happens on the internet. If something happened that hinders your ability to get a job, you are just going to have to deal with it and try to get people to trust/ believe you again.

    1. I agree with you, people need to think about what they post. If you regret your posts you shouldn't be on social media at all.

    2. I think it also depends on what kind of state they were in at the time of the event happening. Were they depressed? Just a little kid? Those factors would need explaining.

  10. I think that as long as the information is not accurate it should be removed. Something you might post now may not be the same person you are 10-15 years from now. You also should be smart with what you post on the internet because somebody always has it and it may not be able to get removed.

    1. Most things on the internet are inaccurate, that would take years to fully remove.

    2. People and internet will change over 10-15 years, so it would be really amazing to be able to get rid of things from past years that are not accurate about yourself and make it so new employers or friends can't see something from the past.

    3. I don't believe someone should have the right to completly remove data related to them because when you post something on, Facebook for say, Facebook now legally has rights to that post and have the right to keep it.
However, I do think that a person who posts the post should have the ability to determine how people can view it.

  11. I feel that people need to be smarter on the internet, if you feel that you need things removed that badly, you shouldn't be on the internet in the first place. It is basically impossible to remove things permanently from the internet, so you need to think about what you post.

    1. I agree, you should always think twice before you post something on the internet and you should always be thinking about the outcome. Like you said it is basically impossible to remove something completely from the internet so you should always have that in your mind when you post something.

    2. I agree that you should be mindful of what you put on the internet, however, sometimes when you are younger you post things without really thinking or post things about yourself or an opinion you had that you no longer feel.

      Delete
    3. That is a really good point. People wouldn't have to stress about getting things removed if they didn't have something bad on there in the first place.

  12. I feel that if the information about you on the internet is false, then you should be able to have it removed. However, it could take a while to have it removed.

    1. I agree, although it is next to impossible to completely remove something from the internet. People need to be more cautious about what they put on the internet so this problem can be avoided.

    2. I agree Charlie. It is almost impossible to remove something from online and that people should be cautious.

  13. Using the internet takes responsibility. People should know what to post and what not to post. Sometimes we make mistakes and put something on the internet that we don't want. It would be really cool to be able to go back and get rid of any false/ or accidental posts.

    1. In some cases people have no control over what is posted about them and often just because it's a "credible" source of info it can ruin someone even if it is Fake News.

  14. I think anyone should be able to delete anything about them, regardless of wether or not it is accurate. Some people do not want their personal information online for everyone to see. It should be a basic privacy right that should not require so much effort to get deleted. But once something is on the internet, it is on there forever no matter how hard you try to delete it.

    1. I agree with your statement although I also believe that is why nobody should put personal information on the internet in the first place.

    2. I agree with this, but with the internet once something is posted it is almost impossible to remove. Just beause everything we post get saved by so many different people and websites. I just dont think it possible to remove something from the internet really.

  15. I think that people should have the right to have anything about them that they want removed, removed from public view. However, the company still should hold the right to keep that individual's data under thier own concent.

  16. If you have information that may present problems for you in the future should be updated or taken down if requested because there are huge problems that come from old problems. This man lost business opportunities because of his past the prevents him from moving on.

  17. You should always think twice before posting are you going to be okay with that being out there forever, if your not you should not be posting it. So you should be smarter about what you say how and how you say and to who you say it to.

  18. I think personaly you should just not be dumb about what you post in the first place. You wont have the issue of not being able to get something off the internet if you never put it there in the fist place.

  19. I think people should get to have the option to erase something off of the internet. Maybe they were "tagged" in a picture of them going out when they were 20s and maybe there in their 30s and they're a completly different person.

  20. I thnk people should have the ability and right to have negaitive stuff removed from the internet and public. Everyone makes mistakes and just because you make 1 online mistake shouldn't mean you should be judged by the public for the rest of you life
