"The Cloud"
You've probably heard it said that the world has gotten smaller. This is true because, since the development of the Internet (the 'Cloud') and such things as Tweeting, texting, instant messaging, social networking (Facebook, Instagram), we've grown much closer. The distance between us, geographically, doesn't matter near as much anymore.
In many ways, this is a good thing. But, in some ways - not so much. While the world has grown closer together, we're also closer to those people who would try to hurt us or take advantage of us. Most people are good - but it's easier than ever for those that aren't to target people who aren't prepared, or aware of the dangers.
So, you've just met a student who has NEVER been on the internet. Their family just moved to the area, and just signed up for internet access at home for the first time. Knowing what you know right now, what would you warn that person about? What would you tell them to be careful of, when they're on the Web? How would you tell them to behave - what precautions should they take?
You don't have to look this up - base it on what you already know - what you've already learned. You CAN research a little on the internet, if you need to...
I would firstly warn that person to never put their personal information out to the public, I would make sure they know the dangers of identity theft and many other problems. I would then warn them about hacking, hackers are everywhere and always working so they would need to be careful not to go to any improper adds or sights.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, but I would also tell them about the good sides of the internet and tell them how it can be very helpful also.
Deleteof course, the internet is very helpful but if the risks aren't warned then it can be of more trouble then good.
Deletei agree, but like hope had said, id also tell them the good things about the internet as well.
DeleteThe internet is bad because there are people that are getting viruses on there computers, they are crashing, the servers are crashing, and the aliens are trying to hack your computers. You also might be getting viruses from unsafe website.
ReplyDeleteSo, what do you do to avoid these things.....other than the aliens?
DeleteWith the pop ups there is a great deal of viruses going out do not click on pop ups your computer gets viruses, i would be more worried about getting hacked
DeleteYou could avoid these things by clicking pop ups and not downloading games or anything on your laptops so that you don't get viruses.
DeleteI agree with you cade, because people shouldn't just click on popups and and there are a lot of hackers that with try and seal you identity and personal informantion.
DeleteIt's always good to run your antivirus every couple of days to prvent your computer from being corrupted. Most computers come with one preinstalled, Windows has AVG and mack has malwarebites.
DeleteThe first thing I would tell them is to NEVER share personal information on any part of the web that is public. The only time it's fine to put personal information is when you're ordering something from a safe and trusted website. Another thing I'd tell them is to never reply to messages or emails from people that they do not know. One more thing I'd tell them about is how easy it is for hackers to get your personal information which could lead to identify theft or something more severe.
ReplyDeletei agree becuase if you share your information even 1 time its on there forever it only takes one hacker to get all your information don't share it.
DeleteI agree with not sharing your information, that is the best thing to do. Anyone could claim your personal information as their own, or use it for the wrong reasons. Once its out there it will never go away.
DeleteI agree. People could use that information and things like identity theft could happen to you because of the personal information you shared out there.
DeleteI left this out in mine about not shareing personal info, but it's defenetly important I should have stayed on the ball!
DeleteI agree with you 100%, you should never post personal information.
DeleteI have heard of people getting messages on facebook, from people they didn't know with weird names, and when they opened the message their facebook got hacked. The hacker would post weird things on there wall and message the friends on facebook, an they would get hacked.
DeleteI would tell them not to friend people they don't know on Facebook, or any social media accounts. I would also tell them not to post things they might regret because it will never go away. Keep your personal information private, like your name, number, or address. Don't trust anyone you do not know on the internet ever, while they could be a normal teen, they could also be a child predator.
ReplyDeleteI agree because you can protect your self by never sharing any of your personal information because it makes it easier for hackers, and like you said when you post something make sure it not going to be something your going to regret because it will never be going to go away once you hit post. So make sure you think about what your going to post before you hit post.
DeleteI agree because that is really the easiest way to protect yourself from other people. There is also the whole T.H.I.N.K. acronym for posting stuff online, but I don't know it. that's a really good way to tell if it's 'post-worthy' or not.
DeleteI agree, child predators are a very real thing and happens far too much. Never share personal information no matter how convincing the other person or website might be.
DeleteIf I had just met someone who just started using the internet, I'd give them a few ways to be safe. The first one would be to NOT share personal information like their name, address, phone number, etc. Also, I'd tell them not to add anyone they don't know on social media like Facebook or Snapchat.
ReplyDeleteI would tell them not to add anyone they don't know as well. It's very dangerous out there with all the predators on the web, you need to be very careful. I agree with you 100% Sam!
DeleteI would first tell them that everything they post or look up on the internet is there virtually forever, so they should be very careful what they say and do online. A good rule of thumb is don't say anything that you wouldn't want your grandma to hear. Another key point is that you should NEVER share personal information such as your address or phone number, there are bad people searching for information to be able to steal and corrupt your assets. Despite these warnings and bad things, the internet is an amazing tool that if used properly can ease your way of life and further enhance you knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI agree that is a good rule to live with "Don't say anything that you wouldn't want your grandma to hear." And don't give personal information
DeleteI agree, that it is a good rule to use, but people still ignore it and post what ever they want and abuse the privilege, (not the right) to use the internet.
DeleteI Agree, whatever is said on the internet, is VERY likely to be saved by someone, or even something. Just travel lightly yet cautiously and you should be fine.
DeleteWhen you go on the internet and your searching something up it will be there forever, you make think you have deleted it but its still on there. Thats with sharing/using your personal informnation, don't share it because it will be there forever and other people can hack it and get your information
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I would double check everything before posting and making it public because it will be there forever even if you think you deleted it everything is still there. I would tell them only to post things if they are helpful, kind, and appropriate.
DeleteI agree. One thing that sticks in my mind when I'm online is "When you apply for a job, employers will look for what's on your social media." That makes me think about what I share.
DeleteI would warn them about what they search up on the internet, there are many viruses out there and it is very easy to download one and have your computer hacked. I would also warn them about suspicious behavior while they are in messaging apps or chat rooms etc. I would tell them to be responsible and use the internet for appropriate use only .
ReplyDeleteTrue, everyone thinks once you delete it off your laptop or device that it's just gone but really it just there forever and it's never really gone. Like you said you should make sure your going to be okay with whatever you say to someone.
DeleteI would warn about what they click on (ads, pop-ups, and sketchy websites). There are so many people out there trying to exploit peoples computers, accounts, and identities. I would just tell them to be careful on what they click on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with telling people to be careful, by not clicking on sketchy things. This may not work though because things can be very tempting to click on. Hackers are everywhere, just be smart and safe.
DeleteThat's a good point. Many people get viruses or hackers from downloading things or clicking pop up ads
DeleteIt's true, while certain things like pop ups and third party downloads have a higher potential to be dangerous, anything can contain virus. The best way to do this is have a strong anitviral program running. Moral of my point is you can never be to catious even if it seems safe.
DeleteI would just teach the simple thing. I would tell them the safe websites because there are countless bad ones you wouldn't be able to name them all but most of the online action happens on about 15 websites. I would teach them how to use antivirus software and tell them not to click on ads after that your pretty much set.
ReplyDeleteWhat if the adds are just so cool looking and they have to click on them? Would you show the person facebook or snapchat or anything?
DeleteIt would be the best to show them the better more professional ones like Facebook, Instagram, Roblox, and Snapchat to help keep them from having to learn from mistakes
DeleteI agree that they should use an antivirus. My parents didnt use on and every computer the own has a virus
DeleteI am gonna add more in the fact that I should tell them no contact with strangers and defenetly never meet one in real life cause thats about the worse thing you can do.
DeleteI would warm them about all the dangers of the internet such as predators and viruses. I'd educate them on how to be safe and not to give out your private information to anyone. Everyone should always talk to a parent before downloading anything to avoid harmful viruses or hackers.
ReplyDeleteThe internet can be a good place and it can be a bad place. Theres people on the internet that will try to steal your personal information from you, so never use your real name, address, picture. There are inappropriate websites that arn't for everyones eyes. There is really good looking things and really gross looking things on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely warn kids about the dangerous viruses, capable of ruining your brand new computer, or that what ever you look up will always be in the "cloud" and there is no getting rid of it. I would even let them know about the good, like being able to save any picture or note they wanted, as long as it isn't personal information.

DeleteI would also tell them about hackers and strangers trying to get them to meet up in certain places. I would tell then about good things however because you can communicate with friends and family but just do not talk to people that you do not know. I think that the internet is also good because it can help you with homework.
Delete
DeleteViruses are for sure one of the biggest dangers on the internet. Teaching kids about the dangers of ads and things that seem too good to be true is important. Someone who isn't educated would go clicking on ads that say "earn free cash now!" and before you know it they're broke.
Informing them not to post any pictures, videos, or info they'd like to keep to themselves is a great idea.

ReplyDeleteI would tell them that the internet is very helpful in many ways such as, shopping, communicating with your friends and family, it can help you with your homework, and it can also give you directions to places. However there is many dangers in using the internet. Never give out any personal information for instance your credit card details, your phone number, your address, etc. Be wise on what you post because once you post it, it is out there forever even if you think you may have deleted it. Never talk to anyone who you don't know, people online may not be who they seem to be.
ReplyDeleteSo true, with everything we do online today such as shopping and directions (like you mentioned) we can be prone to giving information we shouldn't on the wrong websites. People start to think that because they give their billing information while buying something that it is okay to say that information anywhere.
DeleteI agree. I personally could not live without the internet because of how helpful and fun it is. Many people spend up to 8 hours a day on the internet and with so many people being online all the time, you have to be careful about what you share.
DeleteI would tell them to enjoy themselves. Explore the web and it's possibilities, but bewhere of people who want to hurt you. Pop up adds, little advertizement boxes that appear on your screen, can give you viruses which can steal information from your computer. Also, watch what ou post, nothing is truely private on the internet, so don't put any private information. Address, social security number, ect.
ReplyDeleteThese are some really good points. They can have fun online but they should also really watch what they are putting out there.
DeleteYou should never accept any random friend requests from anyone on any website and never give any personal information out about your self like you phone number, address, where you go to school, no pictures of your self to anyone you don't know or don't trust because it can turn out really badly, and don't click on any type of adds or that anyone sends you because you don't know what they could really be, If it does happens be sure to tell a parent or adult that you trust.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Sending pictures of yourself to someone you don't know is dangerous. They could say they are someone completely different than who they really are.
DeleteI would tell them to watch out because there are some bad things on the internet. There are sites the try to put viruses on computers and people that make ads that steal information. But if they take the right precautions they can be safe and be happy on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI'd inform them to use it correctly by never giving away personal info like social security numbers, credit card info, and address because the amount of weird fellas on the internet is higher then that of the kind hearted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, but I would also inform them on other personal information that they shouldn't share such as their phone number, and post pictures of themselves. I would also tell them how the internet can be useful for doing research and other helpful things.

DeleteI agree with you to, giving out your personal information to anyone/anything should be avoided as much as possible. I also believe though society has gotten to use to posting personal information online to sources such as the cloud, making it even more important for us to protect ourselves and the cloud.
DeleteI agree with you. I would also inform them about the dangers of clicking on ads and accepting messages from people that you do not know. The internet can also be a useful resource for researching and other related things.
DeleteI think the cloud is a great tool and idea for all of us to use. It allows us to store almost all of our online data, but with all of this data/our data out their it is dangerous as hackers could gain access to the cloud and steal information some of which might be ours. Saying this the cloud is a great thing, we just need to keep it protected.
ReplyDeleteThere are already ways to keep it protected, and they are constantly evolving, such as file compression, storage servers, etc.
DeleteYes, the internet will never be completely secure, but the security is always evolving, which is good.
The internet, without experience can be a very dangerous place full of hackers, predators, and bullies. There are very gross and inappropriate things on the internet.
DeleteYou shouldn't scare newbies, so don't suddenly point out all the facts that "The Internet is DANGEROUS! DON'T DO (this and that and so on)" It should be explained first that the internet is an excellent tool, can be used for a lot, and is a place where you can have a good time. Then, you need to explain that the glory of the inter-webs comes at a price. A price, involving your security, personal information, and safety.
ReplyDeleteThe internet is a great tool yes but with such a great tool it also has a lot of power and influence on society since 97% of the world has access to the internet, and with this power and influence the internet can also be a dangerous place if you don't practice practical internet saftey.
DeleteBut then they will go off doing all the bad stuff and they will be mad at you for not telling them about it.
Deletei agree 100% on what you said trevor. You shouldnt bombard them with the "negatives" you should add some good news as well.
DeleteI would tell them that once something is on the internet, it is on there for ever. Be careful about what you share, and never give up your address or real identity. If a site looks suspicious, leave the site to avoid getting a virus. When used safely, the internet is a fun thing.
ReplyDeleteIf i had to talk to someone about the internet id warm them about all the bad stuff that, could happen; but id also tell them about the plus sides to using the internet, the internet is a very useful and helpful thing, it all depends on how you use it.
ReplyDelete
