The Skills Gap
After watching the 60 Minutes report, discuss the following:
Despite the fact that the U.S. has a very high unemployment rate, there are some career areas where there are thousands of jobs available that can't be filled. Why is this?
What can be done - who, according to the video, should have a greater role in this?
60 Minutes: "The Skills Gap"
I feel that the government and private companies should work together to train the next generation of workers before all of these jobs that are open are lost and we are worse off then we are as of right now. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

DeleteI agree, employers should be willing to train their new employees. It's important that the employers show their new trainees instead of assuming they know what to do.
DeleteI agree that private companies should be working together to train workers.
DeleteMaking the government work with private companies to train employees is only part of the solution. People still have to have the work ethic and determination to work for companies. Too many people want easy jobs that pay amazing but sadly thats not reality. People have to suck it up and actually do something useful with their own hands, work hard and not complain about being unemployed.
DeleteI agree because private companies and the government usually are against each other, but if they would work together we would have a more advanced country, as a work force at least.
DeleteI agree companys should train their newer generation to be prepared for their jobs
DeleteIf people weren't lazy and would actually learn a skill and be willing to work we wouldn't have this problem. So many people are unemployed because they don't know how to do actual work. Its not the companies job to teach people how to do everything, yes they will need to train them in some things but most everything people need to know will be taught in college.
ReplyDeleteI agree there are so many people that are unemployed but they don't want to put the time into work or learn how to work, and the employers need to take the time to teach the employe.
DeleteI agree their are tons of unfilled jobs and people don't wanna work because they are lazy or they don't know how to do their job. The employers need to train the employee's into their jobs.
DeleteCollege, tech schools, and apprenticeships is important to the future of America and her industrial might.
DeleteThe poverty rate in America is 13.5%, do you think the people in those families have the money to send their kids to college? Most jobs these days ask for a college education or degree. It's not as easy as everyone makes it sound.
DeleteThese jobs could easily be filled, but people are too lazy to learn how to do the job. Some jobs wouldn't even require that much training. If it was back in the day, they would be filled but now people are way too lazy and would rather be broke or rely on other people.
ReplyDeleteI agree that unemployment is becoming a bigger problem and people need to focus on getting a job rather than relying on others.
DeleteI agree, but they have to be dedicated to the job and cant be lazy they actually have to work
DeleteI agree, unemployment is getting worse and people need to work on getting a job rather than waiting for a job to come to you.
DeleteI agree most people are too lazy to do the hard jobs and just sit there colecting unemployment. And the bad thing is it's growing as we speak.
DeleteSo many people are unemployed because people don't wanna work because they are lazy or they don't know how to work. The business should train them in so they get to know the computer system or something but they do learn most things in college for the field you are going in.
ReplyDeleteWhat if people don't go to college? I agree that people do not want to learn because they are lazy, but the work is still pretty easy and is easily learned. I just don't understand why people don't want to work nowadays.
DeletePeople don't need to go to college if their dream job doesn't require it.
DeleteIf they don't go to college they probably won't get a good paying job and they will be working at a restaurant. People are just lazy and they don't want to work. They would rather sit at home and play video games then make money.
DeleteExactly they dont want to work they just want to be lazy to get a good job you actually have to work
DeleteWell, you can work in trades and still make plenty. Also, there are lots of folks out there who went to college and AREN'T making very good money. That's why a person (student) needs to have a plan - no matter what they plan on going into!
DeleteThe reason there is such a big skill gap is because people don't like change and they don't want to have to learn something new. The job are so easy to fill if people put forth the effort. People wouldn't be unemployed if they were just a little more flexible with what they want to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree people need to put effort into getting a job and the employers need to put the time into train them if they want the workers.
DeleteI agree that people do not want to learn new things. They would rather just be lazy and rely on other people to care for them. These jobs are easy, but people do not want to learn new things and are just lazy nowadays.
DeleteSometimes the lower classes which at this point do make a large portion of our country's population they just might not have the time and money to go to some of these schools, drugs and alcohol play a big roll in their motivation but sometimes the people who are motivated can't do it due to a lack of money it's not always a laziness thing it's a program our government should work on by making people more wealthy in the lower classes.
DeleteHigh schools should teach students the skills they need in the fields that are complaining that they don't have workers for. Some people might have not even heard of the companies that need workers.
DeleteAbsolutely! In my opinion the problem is largely an effort issue. People need to be flexible and adapt with the changing job market if they really want a job that bad. Yes there are those one in a million cases where people literally can't do anything to get a job but for the most part its effort.
DeleteI support some of your statement, I feel that yes laziness is a part of it, but I also feel people arent afraid of doing a new job their afraid of doing a hard job, everyone wants to do an easy job and make a lot of money now a days, but everyone is to lazy to do a hard job to make a lot of money.
DeleteMake sure you pair that effort with planning. You can work your butt off and go nowhere if you don't know where/what you want to be when you grow up!
DeleteThere are such big skill gaps because people aren't interested in the jobs available, or they don't have the education to do those jobs. It's not so much about being lazy as people think it is, I think that people don't get the education needed because they simply don't have the money. College is extremely expensive.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people now a days don't have the education for jobs and they are not interested in getting the education for the jobs. Collage is expensive but there are ways to make it not so expensive is you really want to do something.
DeleteKailey made a good point. College may be expensive but there are many ways people can earn money for it such as scholarships or joining the army. People just don't want to go after what they want if it's too much work.
DeleteI agree, because college is so expensive that could be one of the reasons, but I also think that it is because some people are lazy and simply just don't want to put in the time and effort.
DeleteThe reason that for not having as many people working is because people are lazy and they don't want to try new things. Jobs can be easy to find if you just put some effort into it. I think that people need to start working harder because the choices we make now are affecting the next generation.
ReplyDeleteYou made a good point. If people don't start working harder for jobs their choices could hugely affect the next generation.
DeleteThere is a skills gap because people don't care enough to learn a skill for a job. Then they rely on welfare to get by. If you put in the effort and work hard, you will get a job. Employers are also to blame because they often require many years of experience. People need to start somewhere, and grow from there.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this, if the people aren't given a place to start then how are they expected to adapt a skill for the job? too many employers require experience but they will not get that if someone does not train them.
DeleteI agree, A lot of americans don't have an education and don't have the money to get an education.
DeleteNow a days people would rather work at home than in an office or factory. They are too lazy to learn a necessary skill for a job. There would be no skill gap if people would just put in more effort. They can easily be trained for the job, but they need to know what they are doing first and that is just to much work for some people.
ReplyDeleteIts the people that don't try and don't pursue in what they need to get a good job. Not everyone is lazy and there are people out there that come up with a plan and do what they gotta do to get the job they want.
DeleteI also think that people are too lazy, and don't want to try new things. The decisions that everyone is making now will effect the next generations as well.
DeleteI agree, it has become too easy for people to get a job without doing anything. they can work from home and not really have any sort of prior training.
Deleteagreed, most people would rather work from the comfort of their home instead of going to a job.
DeleteI agrree with this statement, I think that laziness is huge problem now a days. Its not just this it's that a major part of the skills gap, another huge part of it is how respectful and "qualitative" that worker is, Like is he a good worker even if he is qualified to do the job.
DeleteSome people go through life and just expect that they will find a good job and not have to work in other areas like certain classes in school. If you want a good job that pays well enough to get the things you want then you have to get a good education, have a plan to work in a field that there is a high demand in, and get the training you need to work in that field. If you want to slack in school and not worry about you future or have no plan what so ever, then have fun finding a job. Not everyone is lazy and there are people getting good jobs. You just have to put in the work.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that they are skill gaps is because people don't want to take the time to learn something new, and work. 92% of business leaders think Americans aren't as skilled as they need to be. If people would just put the time and effort in they could get a job.
ReplyDeleteYup. Either the job supplies the training or people weren't learn said skills themselves.
DeleteThese jobs could easily be filled but people are just lazy and useless, people nowadays have the mindset that they can just go through high school and get straight into a high paying job and they are untouchable.
ReplyDeleteagreed.
DeleteI agree, but, I also feel these people could have potential to really contribute to society with just a simple change in mind. What the people need is motivation and stronger work ethic.
DeleteYour absolutly right, people are to lazy to do any of the hard work that involves skill. I think we need to encourage the opposite in schooling.
Deleteim sure people could do and fill in these jobs, but people now a days are so lazy they dont really care.
ReplyDeleteI believe we have a skill gap because peoples society either don't want and/or are too lazy to learn a specific skill, however, I also feel that we could help these people by better teaching work ethic to young people.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that jobs can't be fully filled is because, yes, there is a skills gap and it does exist. It should be up to the person applying for said job with certain skill requirements to learn the required skills themselves. Jobs shouldn't be wasting resources on training new people, they can learn said skills themselves. Unless, the only place they can learn said-requirements is via on-hands practice or if the job is willing to train you.
ReplyDeleteI think the major problem in the skills gap is that everyone wants to have the "cool", high paying job. Either that or people are too lazy to do hard work for good money, people now a days are afraid of tough jobs , but in reality the ones who work hard usually get further in life. I dont think the skills gap can ever be completley gotten rid off because the job market is constantly changing and so are jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think that schools should start stepping it up a notch and start filling in them gaps of education for better and higher jobs But in order to do that i think the people need to be dedicated to doing the harder homework
ReplyDeleteI agree. Students tend to do only the easier homework assignments instead of the ones that could be a lot more important due to the fact that they're more difficult.
DeleteI think that sometimes people don't have the skills to do this job or are to lazy to get the skills to do these jobs, or maybe it could be a hard job and they might not being able to pay them enough. I also think that people are not taking the time train the people to be good at the job.
ReplyDeleteI agree, companies should also put in work and train people to do the jobs they want them to do.
DeleteIt's both a problem of the people and some of the companies. Yes people can be lazy and expect a job to find them, but companies also expect people to come in fully trained knowing how to run everything.
ReplyDeleteI agree that jobs do expect people to know everything and often times they don't. Education is expensive and yes people are lazy but that not the only problem the job owners are picky also.
DeleteI agree with companies wanting people with years of experience at a young age. It's like they expect someone who's 21 to have 10 years of experience.
DeleteThe skills gap is a growing problem in our world today. We are growing up and not learning all of the physical work that needs to be done because of our education. I think that the companys should train their workers like they did in the 60 mins episode to better our generations work force.
ReplyDeleteWith you there, it would be a lot easier to do that, however I doubt that will happen because of how inprofitable it is.
ReplyDeleteI think that the skill gap would vanish if the education system taught productivity, because to many people can work, but are to unincouraged to do so. If we had programs that taught the relationship between work and reward, our society would be better off.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, that's right. Teach the students (or give them the opportunity) the skills they want to learn in school. That way training doesn't need to be offered by jobs and people don't have to take the time to train themselves.
DeleteI feel that the skills gap is caused by the fact that either workers are too lazy or that workers don't have enough experience for the job they're working.
