March of the Machines

March of the Machines

Technology is making our lives simpler, and helping industry to be more efficient, but is it at the cost of our jobs?

Everyone thinks about "what they want to be when they grow up". Do you have to take another look at what you've planned, or start thinking of a new career, because of advances in technology? If you think about it, it's a good thing that we've rolled out the ACP program, because it's important to be aware of what your talents, skill and abilities are, and how they align with what's waiting out there in the world.

What is the job market going to look like when you look for that first job?

Discuss this idea. I've just given you a couple of questions to get the thought process going.

  1. I have a feeling that when we are done with high school and college that most jobs may be automated by robots, there are already robots in the military and in the factories so a smart decision for lots of us would be to look into working with robotics so companies have a reason to hire us because there will always be robots or other mechanisms that need a more intelligent and agile hand but in the far future they may push us out of the work field all together.

    1. I agree, if people learn to use the robots, they could still have a job if theirs was taken by a robot already.

    2. As technology advances more and more jobs are becoming replaced by robots. When we finish college I can't imagine how many more will be replaced. Robots can only do so much however, I cant imagine a robot taking the job of real hands on skillful jobs. Hopefully employers are smart enough to know when to stop replacing jobs and employ people.

  2. It's scary to think that so many jobs are being replaced by robots. People are becoming unemployed and its more difficult to find certain kinds of work. Luckily there are still plenty of jobs in the world that need the skill of a human hand. Anyone, or any machine for that matter, can do simple mass production tasks like screwing in a bolt or picking out defects but there are some jobs that cant be replaced by robots. Jobs such as a blacksmith, electrician, or plumber can't be replaced.

    1. I agree, there are certain jobs that cannot be replaced by robots.

    2. Today we still need humans to operate machinery or fly planes or drive cars. One day there might be passenger planes that fly them self or construction machinery that is operated by a robot. I dont think there will ever be a time when robots do every single job there is.

  3. I too feel that many jobs by the time we graduate will be automated. As the video showed, there are robots in hospitals, but I don't think those will take over in the medical field. I think they will supplement the doctors work, in a way. But it is very true, in the future, most jobs will be automated and people should learn how to use/ fix the robots so they won't be out of a job.

    1. I agree with you, but what if people do not want to learn how to fix or use the robots?

      Delete
    2. I agree that our technology is only going to get better so the robots are only going to be able to do more. I feel that people need to get more computer skills so that we can find a way to work with the robots and like you said be able to fix them because with a large amount of robots things can go wrong and we are going to need people that know how to fix them.

    3. I agree, there will not be many robots in the medical field because there are way to many complex jobs that need to be done.

      Delete
    4. They won't take over the medical field, but robots will likely have a big impact on it and may be dependent in that line of work. It all depends on how accepting of robots the big-company-hospital-people are.

  4. Many jobs in the future will be automated, but some cannot be replaced by robots. It's scary to think this especially when people are losing their jobs because of the them.

    1. I agree, there will be a lot of jobs taken by robots, but they all cant be replaced. Some jobs heed human compassion and a human touch.

      Delete
    2. I agree, although there are a lot of jobs being taken from robots, not all jobs can be taken from robots because there are some things that can't be programmed into a robot.

    3. I agree, there are some jobs that cannot be replaced by robots.

    4. I agree, the robots, although everywhere still aren't able to to a lot of the jobs we have to do.

    5. I'm actually embracing the automation with open arms. Imagine a world were all traffic is automated and controled by a secure network, the number of delays and car accidents would decrease exponetially. Many people don't like the idea of having a computer drive them, but if millions of computerized cars communicate in a systematic way... say goodby to traffic head aches.

    6. I agree, there will be some jobs taken by robots, but they all cant be taken.

  5. By the time we graduate most jobs will be automated. There are robots in hospitals already. People should know how to run and fix robots so that when there job gets taken over by a robot they can be the runner of the robot and they can still work were they are.

    1. I agree with you, but what if they make robots to run and repair the working robots?

    2. Although there are some things robots cannot do in a hospitals, like given shots and do complicated surgeries.

      Delete
    3. They also can't take blood from people but they could give x-rays.

      Delete
    4. There are some thing thats robots just can not do.

      Delete
    5. Jobs will be automated, but not completely. I've never seen a full "field of robots" completely hold down and do a big chain of jobs required to get something done. Jobs like that (shipping companies) will always require human intervention.

      Delete
    6. Can you even imagine what it feels like to be laid off because a robot is taking over your job?

      Delete
  6. I think humans will no longer be needed in most job markets just because using robots will be more reliable and cheaper. Although to build these complicated robots, there will need to be human interaction. opening up a whole new job market.

    1. I agree, people won't be needed in job markets because the robots will be more reliable and more efficient.

    2. What if one day the only job a person can have is to write programs for robots or maintain the robots? What are the people that are not smart enough to do those jobs suppose to do?

      Delete
    3. I agree with the creation of jobs part, but for fields such as philosephy and human understanding, that is a job which robots cant do so their will alway be a use for humans in the job market, its just how much in what amount of time will we be fazed out.

      Delete
    4. I agree, I think a lot of jobs will be going to people working on the
      robots.

      Delete
    5. I agree with the fact that there would be a need for human interaction. There would be more openings for jobs like psychologists/therapists.

  7. I think that robots are taking over our jobs and we need to adapt to working with the robots weather it be in hospitals or working to fix the robots. I think that in the future there will be more jobs for people to do so that the robots won't completely take over but we will need to learn how to work with the robots because they are very useful.

    1. I agree that people need to adapt. Times are always changing and people need to be versatile in their line of work.

    2. I agree people are going to loose there jobs and they just need to get used to it

  8. I don't think it's a big deal that robots are becoming popular, but I do think that their rising popularity is going to put many people out of work. Robots are helpful for doing easy jobs like moving stock around a warehouse, but they are not perfect and cannot do everything.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree, they are not perfect and cannot do everything but people will need to learn how to work with them and adapt to them.

    2. Yes, robots will take up a lot of simple jobs which is bad for simple people in simple fields of work, but that will create more insentive for people to care more about their future career choice and how they approach the job market as well as acedemics.

    3. It's scary to think about that robots will take over our jobs and they can't do everything perfect.

    4. I agree, I don't think their popularity is a big deal. They are simple jobs, and it will cut down on cost to have a robot do it other than a person.

  9. When I get out of high school there will probably be more advancements in robot technology but there will still be plenty of jobs for people to do. Robots can't do every single job humans do but they are staring to do the gross painstaking jobs no one wants to do. Robots really help companies be more efficient.

    1. I agree, they certainly help companies to be more efficient doing jobs that humans either don't want or simply can't do as fast as a machine.

      Delete
    2. They also save a lot of money for companies by not having to pay for workers

      Delete
    3. I also agree with this way of thinking on the topic.

  11. Even though the robots are very useful, they are taking jobs away from people. There are some jobs that robots cannot do, such as very complicated jobs. People can work with the robots like fixing them, because when something goes wrong with them someone is going to need to know how to fix them.

    1. I agree, they do take jobs away from people, however, they also provide harder more advanced jobs that most-likely are going to pay better then the job they took. What sounds like a better pay? moving supply around a factory or repairing machinery.

  12. I feel that robots will eat up a portion of the job market in some fields, but at the same time its going to create plenty more jobs in other way because their is going to be a need for people to make and desighn/inovate these robots in theses fields in the future as well.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, as long as there is new technology being put out there we will need more people to figure out hoe to make them more efficient. I wonder if one day all jobs will be working on robots instead of doing actual work.

      Delete
    2. I think that since all these new robots are coming out that we will need people to maintain and make them. This will open up plenty of new jobs for people. It isn't like the jobs the robots are taking are jobs people actually want to do.

      Delete
    3. As robots become cheaper and more avaliable, you may find yourself being a buisness owner, this way you can do whatever job you like, and make money using robots. So, while more jobs will be made, more local and large buisnesses and companies will emerge.

      Delete
  13. When we graduate high school and collage, most of the jobs will be run by robots, so will the companies really need to hire people to do the jobs when they already have robots to do it and they would mess up less and they wouldn't need breaks like humans do.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think that while robots do take up jobs, most of the jobs they take are ones no one else wants to do. Robots also need to be maintained so people could get jobs in that department.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We will likely depend on robots for a lot of stuff, such as online shopping warehouses depend on robots for finding and transporting objects, but they won't steal our jobs. Doing so would likely cause bad effects on the economy and raise unemployment by a *big* percent, and I think the big companies see that and are trying to take it easy and careful by adding robots to their business practices, while not going overboard.

    1. I agree trevor you put a lot a thought into this

  16. I feel robots will indeed take up most simple-minded jobs that don't require too much thought but more labor, however, humans will need to become smarter and more advanced to build and take care of these machines. Robots cannot take on the the ability of human thought process and decision making, there are some jobs they are just simply not going to be fit for replacing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Even though many machine will be taking the jobs of workers, this doesn't come at a complete loss. With the robots in this day's world it will also be creating jobs by needing people to operate, build, and program these robots.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As technology advances more and more robots are taking human jobs i think in the continuous years they are no longer going to need humans but if you think humans need breaks what about if robots need repairing

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's kind of scary to think that when we graduate and are out of college, most basic jobs will be controlled by robots leaving all the more difficult jobs to us. In certain ways robots are a good thing for companies. They overall will cost less money than if you were to hire a worker, but can they do the job just as well?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree that it will be harder for us to find jobs, but I don't think robots will take over every job because as it is going now this is a slow moving process and it is very expensive with many glitches.

      Delete
    2. I agree about finding jobs that haven't been taken over by robots will be difficult. Although it would speed up work for companies, they would cause fewer jobs to be available for people.

      Delete
  20. It's weird to think that many of the jobs that students want to do in the future will most likely be taken over by robots by the time we graduate.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that instead of trying to get a job that you want now, you may have to think of a job you will want in 6 years or so, because there is a high chance of it being automated. If you wanted to be, say a taxi driver, you may find that taxis don't need drivers. Instead think of a job you may like when robots are a big deal, like a mechanic or robotic engineer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Scary to think that a lot of jobs could be replaced in the future, and isn't there job issues as of now? Imagine having less jobs when robots start to take over a lot of simple minded jobs.

  24. We will need jobs in the future we will just need to modernize the jobs. Right now we have robots doing the jobs that are very boring like moving stuff from one conveyer belt to another. In the future we could have robots doing the dirty jobs that no one wants. And even if everything gets replaced by robots we will still need programers fore those robots.
